A Gift From Nature #02 : Sisal Fibre
Sisal is a naturally strong and hardwearing fibre extracted from the Agave sisalana plant that grows in the arid region of Karangasem, Bali – Indonesia. Nowadays, sisal has been the versatile fibre because of its strength, durability, ability to stretch, affinity for certain dyestuffs, and resistance to deterioration in saltwater.
PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT
At Sheo Home Living, we are completely passionate about creating authentic collection made from sisal fibre; sourcing only the finest grade natural materials to be used in the craftsmanship. In order to transform the design into an object, we are using traditional technique for twining, braiding, and weaving.
Sisal fibre has a perfectly imperfect texture that adds earthy beauty to any rooms. The fine texture offers wide range of home decoration ideas, such as: lampshades, mirrors, and rugs. Additionally, this fibre and its following activities like cultivation, fibre extraction, processing, and making value added products could augment the employment opportunities for income generation in rural sector especially for our Balinese artisans.
"Sisal has a promising future not only because of the new uses of this fibre, but also because of growing public awareness that natural fibre is environmentally friendly."
ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS
Sisal is a renewable resource par excellence and can form part of the overall solution to climate change. It can be harvested all year round for many years. Measured over its life-cycle, sisal absorbs more Carbon Dioxide than it produces. During processing, it generates mainly organic wastes and leaf residues that can be used to generate bioenergy, produce animal feed, fertiliser and ecological housing material, and at the end of its life cycle sisal is 100% biodegradable. By contrast synthetically produced fibres do not possess any of these traits. Moreover, sisal plants reduce soil erosion through its extensive root system and contributes positively to watershed management. Sisal plants used as hedges act as effective vegetative barriers / fences to protect the crops lands and forests from predatory animals and intruders.
